Mercury Retrograde in Taurus 4/28/16-5/22/2016

mercury

On April 28, Mercury stations retrograde in Taurus, joining Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto in this backwards phase. With so many planets currently retrograde, many of us are definitely feeling the funk; fuzzy brained, slow motion reality, indecisiveness and a general feeling of discontentment with life.  There may be a sensation that we have been here before, as we find ourselves reviewing, re-doing and revisiting themes from the last several months.

Mercury retrograde is an Earthly “optical illusion” where Mercury appears to be moving backwards, for 3 weeks, 3 times a year. During these times, one may notice “things” of a mercurial nature tend to go a bit awry.

As Mercury rules communication, we may find issues arise in all the many forms we use to communicate today, as well as with all those we communicate with. Mercury retrograde will affect everyone differently, however those who have strong Virgo, Gemini energy or highly aspected Mercury in their charts, may notice these periods of time to feel particularly frustrating. [With Mercury retrograde in Taurus, those with highly aspected Taurus or Venus will also feel the tug a bit more.]

As Mercury slows to station retrograde, our logic and abilities to reason may slow down with it. Most will notice their thoughts become sluggish, while at the same time creating a scatterbrained effect. It is common for listening and staying focused for extended periods of time to prove more difficult than usual; and to find that in the midst of a conversation you lose your train of thought. This often accompanied by the thought/feeling that “nothing is going right or according to plan.”

As legal agreements and contracts also fall under Mercury’s ruling, it is best not to sign or commit to anything new during these times. Retrogrades are ideal for re-visiting ideas, jobs, or relationships from the past, but attempting to begin or commit to new endeavors during these periods can backfire and is not recommended. With the constant change and the rather peculiar way of Mercury retrograde, it can be hard to predict what the outcome of situations will be. There is the tendency for whatever was agreed upon in said contract to change once Mercury goes direct.

However, in today’s world, it is difficult to stop from functioning and living in a “forward” motion. Many people find themselves in situations or careers where they must sign agreements or initiate new projects, life happens and deadlines are set, waiting until Mercury goes direct is not an option. It would be wise to be extremely cautious when/if you do find yourself in these situations, that all facts are thoroughly discussed and all fine print is carefully gone over (and over and over again). Though there are many inconveniences of its nature, (re-doing things over again being one of them) Mercury retrogrades can serve as a time for slowing down and really taking a good look at what is happening in our lives and how we can redirect things and make them better. There is no reason for fear or withdrawal from life, (though you may feel a bit more introverted during these times) but there is the need for heightened awareness, clear intentions, patience and preparation.

When Mercury is retrograde, it is a good time to expect the unexpected. Delayed flights, traffic jams at odd hours, computer/electronic malfunctions and miscommunications are often a very obvious part of the experience. Preparation is key to avoiding and overcoming such obstacles during this time. Some ways one can prepare are: allowing for more time to get from point A to point B, making copies of important documents, backing up computer files and double checking details you wouldn’t normally think twice about. When Mercury is retrograde, plans seem to never quite be set, life feels wobbly and uncertain. Leaving room for error and time for backtracking is helpful, while being uptight and trying to “fight” against the current will likely prove a waste of energy. Though we may consider these things to be inconvenient to our daily lives, they serve to help guide us. Underneath the mental fog and distractions is opportunity. Practice going with the flow.

While Mercury is retracing its path, there is increased mental ability to use retrospect in a positive way. To reassess the way we have done something, to revisit old ideas and thoughts- things that we didn’t commit to at the time but find new reason to appreciate now. There is support for reconnecting with old friends, rekindling old flames as well as the likely hood that current relationships will be under scrutiny and review. It is common for old relationship issues that have been brushed aside to rear their head, and it is likely that with the flux in communication, it will be difficult to deliver the message so both in conversation are on the same page. It may be necessary to confirm that your message is heard and comprehended by the other party in the way in which you intended, and to make sure that you are hearing and understanding others correctly too. It is important to note, that this is really not the time to take drastic measures. Do not do anything that you cannot undo – if necessary.

As Mercury approaches the 23° of Taurus on Thursday, at 10:20am PST it will appear to slow to a stop, and then slowly begin retracing its path of the last two weeks. Taurus is associated with stability, ones’ sense of security (inner, physical and financial), and the ability to persevere and strive no matter what obstacles may be in the way. It is ruled by Venus, and is therefore also associated with things of a sensual nature, that which we find pleasure in, as well as matters of the heart. With Mercury stationing retrograde here, it is likely we will find ourselves feeling rather uncomfortable and our lives rather precarious. There may be issues surrounding what we normally consider our security blanket, where we find that that which once kept us safe, brought us peace or helped set our mind at ease might not offer the same level of comfort it once did. Shifting perspectives present us with dilemmas, as we find ourselves torn between choosing that which has always seemed safe, and that which we know will bring us future security. In addition to the usual quirks and inconveniences of Mercury retrograde, with Taurus in the picture, there is likely an instinctive response to withdraw and become self-reliant, or hide away. If you find yourself giving into hermit-like tendencies, allow yourself the necessary solitude, for it is truly in the quiet times alone, that you may reconnect with and regain your inner strength and momentum.

Mercury stationing retrograde in the 11th house finds us re-evaluating our ideas, beliefs and the social groups and networks we find ourselves to be members of. We will likely be considering how safe we feel among the groups in which we consider ourselves a part, and the stability or lack thereof, that it brings to our lives. Do the groups you are a part of bring out the best in you? Do you feel supported, like you are able to be true to yourself? Or do you find you must wear a mask to fit in?  There may be a need to re-create one’s group identity, perhaps taking on more responsibility or relinquishing some so others may uphold their part. As the 11th house is also associated with the earnings of the 10th house, or our career, there may be a need to look at and reassess how we handle our successes, whether it be money, social status or power.  We also may find there to be some sort of connection with the “outcome of our efforts” and some emotional stirring that is taking place within our closest relationships.

With the Moon and Pluto both in Capricorn, making a trine to Mercury retrograde, we are likely to experience a deep urge to express our emotions, to speak what we feel and think. However, with Mercury retrograde, there is a very good chance that those expressed emotions will be shared in such a way that they feel cold and detached, this likely leading down a road of one miscommunicated encounter after another. Try not to assume or finish others sentences. Practice your listening skills. Give yourself and others space; physical space, mental space, and a safe space to share and be without judgement. In removing judgment for others, you may notice that you lighten the load on the judgments you hold against yourself.

Meanwhile, Mars retrograde in the 5th house squaring both Neptune and Jupiter puts an extra big damper on our sense of creativity, sexuality and overall sense of fun. There may be difficulties letting go and managing stress; and activities which may usually bring pleasure and or release may lead down a frustrating road of anxiety and criticism. It would be wise to question whether being unnecessarily harsh on yourself or others is likely to produce the intended results. Know the difference between constructive criticism and being an asshole, and do your best to avoid the latter, but recognize that with the ease in which things are likely to be miscommunicated, it might be safer to just bite your tongue for now.

As with all retrogrades, the next few weeks will be full of ups and downs and lots of backwards. Focus on planning ahead and going with the flow. Make sure to allow for some alone time, let your mind wander and your thoughts and creativity flow. Aim to be present in your body, getting a massage or some kind of bodywork can really help provide some much needed grounding, especially when everything feels so up in the air. But most importantly, remember to be gentle with yourself and with those around you, a little TLC really does go a long way.

The specific affects of planetary transits differ based on where planets are located in one’s natal chart and where the current planets are transiting. Mercury Retrograde in Libra 9/17/15 – 10/09/15: Re-Calibrating the Scales

On Thursday, September 17th, Mercury stations retrograde in Libra for the next 3 weeks, bringing with it the tendency for “things” of a mercurial nature to behave unpredictably. For those who are sensitive to the change in energies, it is likely you have already felt this shift, since Mercury entered its shadow period on August 28th. As Mercury slows to station retrograde, logic becomes harder to access and life feels fuzzy. However, in addition to Mercury stationing retrograde this week, we are still in the midst of the eclipse zone, caught between last weeks Solar Eclipse in Virgo, and the  September 27th Lunar Eclipse in Aries. The energy of the eclipse zone is very different from that of Mercury retrograde. During the period between eclipses, there is a feeling of acceleration through life. It is a time to really integrate change and has the potential to lock in new habits while eliminating others. With Mercury stationing retrograde during this time, we are likely to feel a sense of time warp. We also may find ourselves feeling a bit more emotionally erratic than usual. Pay attention to what you are feeling. Reflection is the goal here, as it is not the best time to act on one’s emotions.

As Mercury traces its path backwards through Venus ruled Libra, it is likely we will again be forced to deal with and re-consider issues pertaining to Venus’ recent retrograde.  Many of us have found ourselves making adjustments to our relationships and / or work life, we have been reviewing our values and our relationships with people and things we treasure most. Perhaps you’ve decided to pursue dreams that involve changing careers, maybe even going back to school. Maybe you’ve finally acknowledged a call from within to express your creativity. Maybe you have been struggling with imbalance in relationships – exerting more energy than your friends or partners – and have therefore decided to spend more time on you. Either way, getting to this point or realization has not necessarily been a walk in the park, and with Mercury retrograde triggering these issues in Libra – we may find we are not quite done processing and re-designing our new plan.

Libra is the sign associated with the Scales of Justice. Libra is gracious, fair, and has the uncanny ability to see things from multiple angles. There is a sense of serenity and great beauty associated with Libra.  There is a need to create and project balance and aesthetics into the world. Venus retrograde had us re-aligning our heart with our souls intention, and now Mercury retrograde is here to help us re-align our mind with our heart and soul. The process of getting things into alignment can be tricky, as those of you familiar with Mercury retrograde can attest to. For those of you less familiar with the details surrounding Mercury retrograde, here is an excerpt from an older Starface Astrology blog:

It is important to note, that this is really not the time to take drastic measures. Do not do anything that you cannot undo – if necessary.

In addition to the usual quirks of Mercury retrograde, as Mercury backtracks through Libra it will continue to highlight our relationships. Any unresolved issues that are still lingering around since Venus stationed direct will require our attention. There is a need to achieve balance, to relieve unnecessary stress and find peace. However, with Mercury retrograde in diplomatic Libra, we may find our ability to play fair under strain. Continuing to address issues that have been causing us stress and occupying much of our attention over the last 2 months gets old, and patience may be wearing thin.

Some may find they are tired of acting diplomatically and trying to remain even keeled. In this case, it may be time to re-evaluate how you’ve been handling your emotions in regard to this situation. Have you allowed your needs to go unmet? Emotional outbursts and strong feelings of anger, may indicate you have not been honestly or effectively communicating your needs. Re-consider your methods and revise your message. On the other hand, the Libran ability to see things from more than one perspective may allow others to awaken to the fact that perhaps they’ve been the one taking their partners, friends, etc. for granted. Maybe you are typically angry and argumentative, but feeling rather empathetic and understanding. This may serve as a time for you to better see where your partner is coming from, in turn helping you to realize that maybe the scales are not as balanced as you thought. Remember, it is necessary to own up to one’s actions and habits in order for the scales to balance evenly. The sooner we take responsibility for ourselves, the easier it will be to successfully navigate this retrograde.

In addition to Mercury stationing retrograde and the eclipses, the opposition between Neptune and Jupiter will be exact, further blurring the lines of reality.  Make sure to double check everything and to read the fine print. If something feels too good to be true, investigate deeper. This is not a time to over look facts and minor details.

Saturn makes its official journey into Sagittarius, after re-visiting the last bit of Scorpio over the last 3 months.  Despite the fog that is likely to fill our heads over the next 3 weeks while Mercury is retrograde, Saturn in Sagittarius is driven and focused.  Saturn requires we work hard, but provides us with the discipline and boundaries necessary to achieve whatever we put our mind to. Keep your head up and your eyes on the prize.

Mercury Retrograde in Gemini 05/18/15 – 06/11/15

On the evening of May 18th, Mercury will station retrograde in the 13° Gemini. Mercury goes retrograde, an Earthly “optical illusion” where Mercury appears to be moving backwards, for 3 weeks, 3 times a year.

It is important to note, that this is really not the time to take drastic measures. Do not do anything that you cannot undo – if necessary.

As mentioned, Mercury will be retrograde in the air sign Gemini, and places in the 6th house based off the chart for the time of the retrograde in eastern standard time. This sign is ruled by Mercury and therefore associated with communication as well, further emphasizing the realms in which we communicate. The effects of Mercury retrograde will be different for everyone, (depending on which sign it retrograding through, the planets it is making aspect to and the relation between the current sky and that of the natal chart) but we can all expect to feel it mentally in a rather similar way. Our methods of communication today consist mostly of: in-person – using both verbal and non-verbal cues, phone conversation, text, email, skype/video phone, and “snail mail”. We are all likely to feel these “paths” of communication experience some disruption during the retrograde.

In addition to Mercury being fueled by this Gemini energy, we also have fiery Mars, and the moon falling under this sign as well, each within approximately 5° of each other. The added energy of these two other celestial bodies, creates a recipe for what may appear to some as a disaster, but will ultimately serve as a catalyst for growth.

Martian energy can be irrational and impulsive, while the moon tends to bring emotional tides. The combined energies of the moon, Mars and Mercury retrograde indicate that we will likely be confronted by past issues that brought great amounts of emotion, which have not yet been settled. Some may experience as a mild sort of identity/place in life crisis. This is a difficult time to remain in a state of denial, as the energies in the sky seem to be demanding that issues be addressed. However, Mercury retrograde makes it difficult to address things, especially those of an emotional nature – so it is imperative that when one finds themselves in such situations, that they are able to remain as objective as possible. With Mars in the picture, it is likely that elements of ego will also be involved. It is important to remember that there are 2 sides to every story, and that the truth you may observe can be different from the truth someone else may observe. It is okay to agree to disagree. However, when the facts support it, it is also okay to stand your ground, though this may end up being more of an internal version of standing ones ground, to avoid round-in-circle arguments or discussions.

With Gemini and all of its “occupants” in the 6th house, it is also suggested we make sure we are taking care of our health. Check-ups, annuals, finally getting “something” checked out that you have been putting off, whatever it is – take care of it. The combination of Gemini and Virgoan (ruler of the 6th house) can bring about anxiety, and all the physical ailments that entails. It is a good time to practice meditation, yoga, deep breathing and visualization techniques. Take care of you, your body and mind. Finding a way to be “present” is healing.

Additionally, Mars, the moon and the Sun (who is sitting just 3° outside of the Gemini cusp in Taurus) are all in opposition to Saturn who is across the way in the 12th house, in the 1° of Sagittarius. Saturn’s presence here indicates that all this communication taking place (or not taking place), all the steps we are “seemingly” taking backwards, all that is brewing beneath the surface is triggering some kind of metamorphosis. A sense of reinforcement in the decisions we have made, reaffirming our character.  As with most crises, or times of great internal conflict, this is a time of re-connecting with soul purpose.  Saturn in the 12th indicates that there is great possibility for what we manifest our futures to be. As the 12th house is associated with our greatest strengths and our greatest weaknesses. The energies that fuel creation and destruction are one in the same, it is simply a matter of intention that changes the outcome.

Also involved in this aspect with Saturn, and the stellium in Gemini, is Neptune in Pisces. This can exacerbate the feeling of going crazy. It can bring with it deception, depression and delusional thoughts, which on top of the havoc Mercury retrograde is causing can seem overwhelming.

Luckily, Jupiter and Uranus provide support, and again remind us that if we look to the past, it is likely this problem has arisen before and a solution has been found. It may take getting out of our comfort zone, it may take looking at things from different perspectives, it may take standing tall and strong through challenged beliefs or ideals, but it is possible.

On June 11, at 6:33 pm EST, Mercury will arrive at the end of its backwards journey at 4° Gemini. This is the point in the cycle when Mercury stations direct, and begins its forward motion again. Though Mercury is moving forward, it is in an extremely slow part of its journey, known as the post-shadow period. This is the likely time for the consequences of actions taken or not taken during the retrograde to start revealing themselves. These consequences range in their outcomes, as the element of free will comes in to play when making decisions during this time (and always***).

Each of us has the power within to navigate through this retrograde successfully, we must simply be aware of the signs, slow down and really be clear of intention.

***The planetary positions can be referenced for suggested energies and tendencies of the season. However, how one utilizes, reacts, and responds to such energy is a matter of one’s free will and desire.
